Abraham Lincoln. Unsigned Autograph Document. No place or date, one and one-quarter pages, folio, on faintly ruled blue paper. An "order of court" in the case of Jesse K. Dubois and others vs George Wise, an ejectment suit brought from Lawrence County on change of venue. By mutual agreement the case "is submitted to the court without the intervention of a jury" and the court, "having heard the evidence", concludes "that the plaintiff Jesse K. Dubois, is entitled…as one of the original heirs of Touisant Dubois senr., deceased, to…one undivided fourth part of...lot numbered Twenty, in the town of Lawrenceville…" A similar judgment is entered for numerous other named descendants of Toussaint Dubois. "It is therefore adjudged by the court that the plaintiffs recover of the defendant…the premises…described, together with their costs…And the defendant asking a new trial under the statute, the same is allowed upon the payment of the costs adjudged against him within sixty days…till which time execution hereon is ordered to be staid." Missing extreme tips of two corners, well clear of all writing. Lincoln has lined out about three and a half sentences which, although related to the suit, evidently did not belong in this document. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
