Abraham Lincoln Pencilled Document Signed
Abraham Lincoln Pencilled Autograph Document Signed in full within the text. No place, no date (Sangamon Co., Ill., ca. October 1838), about two-thirds page in all, folio. The top half of this document, which concerns the suit of William Butler vs William Tilford, is in an unidentified hand; Lincoln has written about twelve lines which comprise the lower half. Tilford having been "duly notified…of this suit by publication & service" but not appearing, although three times called, the complainant's bill is "taken as confessed." Lincoln adds: "…It is…ordered and decreed by the court, Abraham Lincoln, be appointed a commissioner to make a survey of the premises…and…report his proceedings to the next term of this court." Records show that in October 1838 Lincoln was appointed to survey the 17-plus acres involved in this suit (a job he evidently contracted out), and in March 1840, according to court decree, deeded the land to Butler (a good friend with whom Lincoln boarded and sometimes roomed prior to his marriage to Mary Todd). Brownish oil stain covers a few words of Lincoln's text but does not obscure it; old glassine repairs to folds on verso. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
