Abraham Lincoln, Letter Signed. Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), President, Letter Signed
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), President, Letter Signed "A. Lincoln" as President, one page on Executive Mansion letterhead, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, March 29, 1863 to Frank J. Bramhall thanking him "...for the beautifully printed and elegantly bound copy of your book 'the Military Souvenir,' you have had the kindness to present me this morning..." Written in the hand of Lincoln's personal secretary John G. Nicholay. The book to which Lincoln refers is a collection of steel engraved portraits (after photographic images) accomplished by John Chester Buttre entitled The Military Sounvenir: A Portrait gallery by Frank J. Bramhall (New York: J. C. Buttre, 1863). It was Buttre's ubiquitous engraving after the Cooper Union portrait that adorned campaign ribbons and biographies and related ephemera that helped propel Lincoln into the White House. Offered together with the font panel of the original transmittal envelope addressed and franked by Nicolay, "Jno. G. Nicolay". Besides some extremely light toning, the letter is in very fine condition with a dark, bold signature. A wonderful example with interesting background history. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
