Abraham Lincoln DS as President
Abraham Lincoln, Manuscript Document Signed "Abraham Lincoln" as President, two pages, 10.5" x 17", Washington, February 18, 1862. A pardon of "one Michael Doyle", who on July 15, 1859 "was indicted and convicted in the Criminal court of the District of Columbia for the crime of burglary, and was by the said Court, sentenced to be imprisoned in the Penitentiary of the said District for the term of four years." But Doyle was no mere burglar as "on the 18th day of the same month, he was indicted and convicted... for the crime of arson, and sentenced to the said Penitentiary for the further term of three years..." Lincoln chose to pardon this seemingly incorrigible criminal due to petitions and letters from "the Jurors who convicted him and the Grand Jurors who found the bills of indictment against him together with a majority of the members of a Grand Jury lately in session, and a number of other highly respectable citizens..." Countersigned by William H. Seward as Secretary of State. According to Basler, Lincoln spent much of February 18 taking care of his two younger sons, Willie and Tad, who were both ill, so ill that he cancelled the normal Tuesday reception at the Executive Mansion. This would be the same illness that would take Willie only nine days later. Clean fold separations could be mended, some minor marginal chipping, seal intact and paper quite clean, overall very good.

Shipping: Flat Material, Large (view shipping information)
