Abraham Lincoln DS 1863
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Politically interesting appointment signed by Abraham Lincoln as President dated 15 May 1863. Here, Lincoln invests Thomas H. Clay, son of Henry Clay, “with full and all manner of power and authority…to agree, treat, consult, and negotiate of and concerning friendship, commerce and navigation between the United States and Honduras…” Two-page document, front and verso, countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward and measuring 10.5” x 16.5”. Before his appointment to Honduras, Clay served in a similar capacity to Nicaragua, which occurred in October 1862 only two weeks after Clay, as a member of the Kentucky legislature, requested of Lincoln that troops under Union General G.W. Morgan be waylaid in Kentucky after a period of hard marching. Lincoln replied to Clay ''You cannot have reflected seriously when you ask that I shall order Gen. Morgan’s command to Kentucky as a favor, because they have marched from Cumberland Gap. The precedent established by it would instantly break up the whole army…I sincerely wish war was an easier and pleasanter business than it is; but it does not admit of holy-days.'' Lincoln clearly had little patience for local politics, even from a Kentucky Union supporter, during severe times of the Civil War. Document has superb full 2.5'' embossed Seal of the United States affixed with red wax in the upper left half of the signature page. Adhesive removed from and expertly strengthened at the mid-horizontal fold with light show-through on verso – fold passes through upper portions of “A,” “h”, and “L” of darkly penned full signature of President Lincoln. Also soiled at blank left corners. Very good condition.
