Abraham Lincoln: A Second Magnificent, Large Bronze Bust by Thomas D. Jones. This powerful image was sculpted in 1864 at Washington, and is signed and dated on reverse. Gone is the carefree expression on Jones' 1861 portrait that called to mind the Lincoln who never tired of telling jokes and anecdotes. Now we see a careworn president with downcast expression showing clearly the toll that the bitter war had taken on him. A remarkably lifelike and moving impression of Lincoln less than a year before he was to die at an assassin's hand.

We find only a single modern auction record. An example was offered for sale at a major New York auction house in 1993. It carried a pre-sale estimate of $12,000-18,000 but failed to meet reserve. The sculpture itself measures approximately 20" tall x 11" wide x 11.25" deep and it rests on a 3.5" x 12" x 7.5" green marble base.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Larg (view shipping information)
