Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed
Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed "A. Lincoln". Four pages, 4" x 5.25", Washington D.C., December 3, 862. Lincoln makes an appointment of an old political foe on the recommendation of an old friend, David Davis. Lincoln's former law partner writes to endorse Thompson R. Webber for the position of paymaster in the Volunteer Service. Webber was from Urbana, Ill., Lincoln's old political turf, and had in the past differed politically with both Lincoln and Davis, "…but he has never been lessened on that account." The man was, Davis writes, "a Douglas Democrat & always loyal...". Lincoln writes a nice, long endorsement mentioning Davis, "I believe I sent over a word from Mr. Webber the other day - This is from Judge Davis, the clerk of one of whose courts Mr. Webber was for a long time." In fine condition; one tape reinforcement on a separation at a fold; usual folds are present.
