Abraham Lincoln. Autograph Endorsement Signed "And the plaintiff doth the like / Howett, McRoberts & Lincoln p.q." Penned at the foot of a document by Somers, Gridley & Benedict, attorneys for defendant, Champaign Co., Ill., May 1850, one page, square quarto. In Nancy Dunn vs Albert G. Carle, the defendant demurs and pleads not guilty. This was a bastardy suit, which Lincoln and his colleagues won in May 1852 when a jury declared Carle the father of Dunn's infant and ordered him to pay $50 support annually. At the same time, Lincoln won a trespass suit against Carle brought by Ms. Dunn's father, for seduction; in that case, the jury awarded the father $180.41 in damages! From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
