Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed "A Lincoln" on an Autograph Letter Signed by Maj. Gen. John A. Dix. One page, 9.5" x 7.5", np, October 13, 1863. The Dix letter from the Department of the East Headquarters in New York reads, "Mrs. Gallie's case, recommended to the Secy of War by Mr. Littlejohn a member of Congress, is very meritorious, and the undersigned begs to write in the recommendation." Lincoln writes, "Hon. Secretary of the War, please see and hear this lady." then signs and dates it. Researching the Civil War personnel records shows that there were two soldiers from New York named Gallie: James Gallie (40 years old) enlisted in June 1863 as a private and was discharged for disability that September. 22-year old Walter Gallie enlisted in May 1861 as a private, was promoted to corporal, and killed in battle June 1862 in South Carolina. This letter might possibly refer to the widow or mother of one of these soldiers. Fine condition; folds with just a small amount of soiling. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
