Abraham Lincoln Autograph Document Signed
Abraham Lincoln Autograph Document Signed "Whitney & Lincoln p.d." No place or date (Champaign Co., Ill., docketed April 1859), about one and one-half pages, folio, incorporating a November 1858 contract between Lysander Hill of Ionia, Mich. and John Williams. By the complicated terms of the latter, Hill purchased 320 acres of Michigan land from Williams at $13 per acre, agreeing to pay in part by assuming notes that Williams had given to the Illinois Central Rail Road. The defendant claims he never saw the land in question, relying "solely on the representations of…plaintiff, as to its description, quality, and value"; that the plaintiff knew it "was purchased chiefly for the pine timber…supposed to be upon it" and claimed that it contained "enough…timber to make at least one million and a half feet of lumber"; and that "in fact, said land…had scarcely any such timber…and was…almost entirely valueless…" The plaintiff had paid over $600 to lift a mortgage, which the defendants "retained…for their damages." Heavy brownish stains, mostly in the left top and bottom margins and central fold, affect perhaps fifteen words of Lincoln's text, which are nevertheless decipherable. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
