Abraham Lincoln. Autograph Document Signed three times "Moore & Lincoln p.d." No place or date [DeWitt Co., Ill.; docketed September 1843], one page, folio. In Andrew Johnstone vs John Weedman, the defendant states that upon trial he will prove that a certain horse "died in consequence of disease, in no way brought on by the fault of this defendant. " Records show that Weedman, hired to feed and care for Johnstone's horse, rode it a distance of 15 miles just before it coincidentally died. Johnstone lost both the present case and an appeal to the state supreme court, partly because he initially brought the wrong type of suit, an action in trover (i.e., to recover the value of personal chattels wrongfully converted by another to his own use). His suits did, however, help lead to the establishment of courts of equity in Illinois. Lincoln's fellow attorney in this case, Clifton Moore of Clinton, Ill., was one of his more frequent "circuit partners" and became a millionaire through land speculation. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
