Abraham Lincoln. Autograph Document, written in Lincoln's hand but signed by David Davis. No place or date [Tazewell Co., Ill.; docketed October 1854], one-half page, folio, on ruled blue paper. In the divorce suit of Rowena Ames vs Sidney Ames, Lincoln writes out the jury verdict and consequent court decree for the judge to sign: "…'We, the jury find the defendant guilty of extreme and repeated cruelty to the complainant, in manner and form as charged….' It is therefore ordered and decreed…that the bands of matrimony…between the said parties be henceforth and forever dissolved. It is further ordered and decreed…that the complainant recover of the defendant her costs herein expended, and she have execution therefor. And by agreement of parties the question of alimony herein is continued to the next term of this court." Lincoln-related divorce papers are uncommon, and this example is choice for being signed by the circuit court judge and friend who became his 1860 campaign manager and one of his U.S. Supreme Court appointees. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
