Autograph note signed “A. Lincoln” as President dated 4 June 1863. Lincoln writes to his Attorney General endorsing Judge Samuel Foot, who writes a short letter on the verso offering his services for U.S. District Judge for the state of South Carolina. Lincoln’s endorsement reads in full, “Attorney General, please preserve – Judge Foot is cousin to the Admiral, & is vouched as an excellent man.” New Yorker Samuel A. Foot served as Judge of the New York Court of Appeals and as a New York state Assemblyman, introduced the resolutions resulting in a condemnation of the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision. His three eldest sons were killed in the Civil War. Foot’s obituary in “The New York Times” mentions that he “was consulted by President Lincoln, whose warm friend he was on many occasions.” Letter measures 4.75” x 7.75” Faint ink streak and 0.25'' line pass vertically through Lincoln’s six-line endorsement, not materially affecting its appearance. Near fine condition.
