Scarce Abraham Lincoln autograph letter signed as President on Executive Mansion stationery, dated 20 July 1863. Letter discusses the promotion of Colonel Charles G. Harker, who commanded a brigade under General Rosecrans and distinguished himself in the battles of Murfreesboro and Chickamauga. Letter, written in Lincoln's distinctive script reads, ''Today Mr. Stratton of New Jersey calls and urges the appointment of a Brig. General of Col. Charles G. Harker, now commanding a brigade in Rosecrans' army. He says Gen. Rosecrans speaks of him in his report of the battle of Murfreesboro & recommends him for promotion. A. Lincoln''. Civil War dated letters by Lincoln, referencing both a key battle and one of his top Generals are quite scarce. Wood frame with simple cream-colored mat measures 23.5'' x 13''. Letter measures 5'' x 7.5''. Also includes typed transcription of letter and portrait engraving of Lincoln. Near fine with very clear, dark writing.
