(Abraham Lincoln) ALS, from N H Lincoln (no relation to Abraham), 6pp, Sept 16, 1848, 4to, Worcester, Mass, to her mother, nice content re the Whig Convention. In part, "...I will commence this letter by giving you something of an idea of the grand Whig Convention which was held last Wednesday in this city, & of the part we took in the affair...nearly three hundred gentlemen delegates...assembled here about 10 o'clock some came earlier but the greater portion did not arrive until the meeting at the City Hall was over...Mr [Abraham] Lincoln of Illinois was present - Mr Hudson, Mr Grinnell, & several members of Congress...we had a dinner Party of fourteen...among those present was the Hon Robert C Winthrop, Speaker of the House...Rufus Choate, Judge Warren...the dinner was rather hurried from the fact that the convention adjourned only for an hour and a 1/2..." At the time of this letter Lincoln was a Whig member of Congress, and was actively supporting Zachary Taylor for the Presidency. Having decided not to run for a second term in Congress, he traveled extensively in New England campaigning for Taylor. Lincoln gave a speech at Worcester on September 12th, highlighting his political views including his opinion that slavery was evil. A couple of the pages are cross written.
