Abraham Lincoln: A Unique Ambrotype Image in a Remarkable Inlaid Wood “Union” Case. A portrait “created” by the maker, probably around the time Lincoln first sported a beard in late 1860, by adding an artist’s version of a beard to a beardless engraved Lincoln image. The resulting concoction is one we have not encountered before; it may have been commercial, or it may be a unique example. The case is of superb quality, with mother of pearl inlaid designs on front and back, and ivory “mats” carefully cut to fit around the brass foil frame and velvet panel inside. The ambro itself is a tad dark, but otherwise excellent. The inlay is missing from the “I” in “Union” and some of the stars on the front, and there is some cracking of the polished veneer surface (the case is nonetheless quite impressive). All in all a most unique and appealing Lincoln item. The oval opening over the ambro measures 1.625” x 2”, and the entire piece is 5.25” x 2.875” when displayed open.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
