Abraham Lincoln: A Marvelous Large Etched Glass
Abraham Lincoln: A Marvelous Large Etched Glass Display Panel. Sometimes termed stained glass, these panels are actually created by a unique technique. The blue elements seem to have been cut out like lacework from a very thin sapphire-colored glass panel. This panel is then laid over clear glass to create a textured finished product. It is unclear whether these were marketed as windows or for mounted display purposes. They are seen in both red and blue and the same manufacturer (unknown) also produced a similar version depicting Ulysses S. Grant. The precise date of manufacture remains speculative. They could have originated during the War, or possibly in the years shortly thereafter, perhaps even during the early years of Grant's presidency. However there quality, rarity, and "feel" strongly suggest them to be period pieces. We are inclined to believe that they date from after Lincoln's assassination. The Lincoln version has none of the patriotic motifs, which were prevalent during the war, around the perimeter, and the presence of cherubs in each upper corner recall the apotheosis images of George Washington. In any event this is one of the most beautiful and elegant of Lincoln display items. We can recall seeing not more than one or two each of the Grant and Lincoln versions over the years. We remember a Grant example which changed hands privately at an early 1990s A.P.I.C. show at about the $2000 price level. The present example measures 22" x 31" (framed) and is set into a more recent wood frame to protect it. Pristine condition.

Shipping: Framed - with Glass, Large (view shipping information)
