<B>Lincoln Appoints a Ship Builder "If No Valid Objection." Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>A. Lincoln</B></I>", with six words in Autograph "<I>if no valid objection is known</B></I>", as president, to the secretary of the navy, Gideon Welles, one page, 7.75" x 10", no place, March 7, 1862. As if it's not enough that Lincoln filled his Administration with his bitterest political rivals because they were savvy and intelligent men, he also went out of his way to listen to them, as this note with his autograph interpolation shows. In full: "The Sec. Of the Navy. Will oblige me by appointing Hanscum Naval constructor at Boston <I>if no valid objection is known</B></I> one of the commissioners to examine River Boats." As with so many Lincoln documents, a name is misspelled here: "Hanscum" was in fact William L. Hanscom, a Portsmouth shipbuilder who, with no valid objection apparently being known, was appointed a naval constructor at the Boston Navy Yard. Published in Basler. In very fine condition.
