Abolitionist Gerrit Smith Printed Speeches and Letters With Slavery Content. A lot of five printed speeches, ranging from one to four pages, 7.5” x 12.25”, dating from 1857 through 1861, each of which has been folded in the typical 19th century manner, stamped, and mailed to Samuel Breesley of Oneida, New York. Gerrit Smith was a committed social activist who thrice ran unsuccessfully for President. These printed speeches are filled with fiery rhetoric about the evils of slavery with mention of the Dred Scott decision, the slavery issue in Kansas, and many other “hot button” topics of the day. The group is in clean, bright condition with only the fold creases associated with mailing present. Fine condition. From the collection of Henry E.
