Abolition of Slavery: Rare Multicolor Lithograph
Abolition of Slavery: A Rare Multicolor Lithograph Celebrating the Passage by Congress of a Constitutional Amendment to Finally Abolish Slavery. While many believe slavery to have ended with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, this was far from the case. That presidential order freed the slaves only in the rebellious Southern states. Lincoln himself clearly indicated that its intention was to disrupt the Southern economy and society, with the slaves themselves being merely pawns in the game. While abolition sentiment had long run high in the North, it was by no means unanimous and at its outset, the War was more about states rights. However, an emotional abolition movement gained strength with each passing year until by the Wars end many considered it to be the chief issue in the conflict. The senate passes what would be the 13th amendment abolishing slavery across the country in April of 1864, but the proposal was not passed by the more contentious house of representatives until January 31st, 1865. This beautiful lithograph, entitled "the triumph of freedom over slavery" features a facsimile of the abolition resolution signed by Lincoln on Feb. 1st 1865. Below is a complete roster of facsimile signatures of all the members of the House and Senate. Around the border are richly colored patriotic and anti-slavery motifs. This lithograph was printed on heavy stock by J. Gibson, NYC, the design having been entered in 1865 by Judson Holcomb. Display condition is excellent, some very trivial light aging detracting little if at all. Wide margins, and no edge damage. There is one trivial edge stain at the bottom, which would be covered by most frames without even requiring matting. We have never seen this colorful item before, and one seldom encounters such large color lithographs from this era.

Shipping: Framed (view shipping information)
