Union general (1819–1893), controversially credited with the invention of modern baseball, who was also the Union general who in 1863, as major general of volunteers, he commanded a division at Gettysburg, taking the high ground, leading 9,500 men against ten Confederate brigades that numbered more than 16,000. The high ground he held became decisive in winning the Battle of Gettysburg. War-dated ALS signed “A. Doubleday, Major Genl. Vol,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 5.75, December 13, 1863. Brief letter sending his autograph. In full: “I enclose my autograph as requested.” Doubleday has also written the recipient’s name and address under the body of the letter. Punch hole to right edge affecting a single word of text, some light creases, and mild toning from mounting remnants on reverse, otherwise fine condition. Doubleday assumed duties in the defenses of Washington, D.C., after the Battle of Gettysburg, where General Meade replaced Doubleday with John Newton. Scarce in war-dated material.
