Abraham Lincoln: An Impressive Large Pastel Portrait with an Old Slave Woman. While this work is signed "J. M. Griffin, Detroit," we have found no information on the artist (a James Martin Griffin, born 1850, is the only recorded possibility, but he seems to have painted only landscapes). Accordingly, it would seem to fall into the "folk art" category. It is a powerful image of the "Great Emancipator" reading a bible along with an elderly black woman. Following the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, there was a great outpouring of graphic and original art with this general theme. The present work most likely dates from that era, although images of Lincoln in similar settings continued to appear for years thereafter. The work is in excellent condition, and housed in an ornate Victorian frame which possibly may be original to the piece. It measures 26" x 32", 25" x 39" as framed.

Shipping: Framed - with Glass, Large (view shipping information)
