CROPSEY AVENUE NO. 1736, BROOKLYN, a vintage gelatin silver print stamped in blue ink on verso "Federal Art Project Changing New York Photographs by Berenice Abbott" and stamped in red "photograph berenice abbott 50 commerce st. new york city." Also annotated in pencil "1736 Cropsey Ave. Bklyn NY neg 182 code IA1 10/29/31."
The house at 1736 Cropsey Avenue was built around 1850 by John Voorhees when he died in 1893 a third storey was added transforming the house into a hotel. The building was condemned in 1936 to make way for the Shore Road Extension. Abbott's other photographs of the buildings on Cropsey Avenue are taken from further away showing them in context of the other houses in this photograph Abbott moves in concentrating on the architectural elements.
