LS signed “A. Burr,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 7, 1821. Burr writes to Mrs. [Martha] Bradstreet. In part: “If you have written me four letters, one of them has been purloined & my reply to those of 19 & 20 Nov. has shared the same fate. I do not now recollect any thing of more business which it is necessary to repeat. of any thing else, I shall never again write to you or from, Albany…. Mr. Walton has the Special Verdict (my draught of its meaning) in his hands for the purpose of making his amendments and I hope & believe that we shall be able to complete it & submit it to the court…the blunders at Delhi notwithstanding. I told you in March last, in Albany, the motive which induced me to recommend these suits & the use to be made, in the Legislature of the judgements in case they should be favorable….” After signing, Burr adds a postscript in his own hand on the reverse: “Being suspicious that my notorious handwriting caused the loss of my letters, I procured this to be superscribed by one of my private secretaries. Please to show it to the Dr. and tell him that it was written by a girl now just 13—that she acquired this handwriting in 15 days, amid other occupations. Why will not the doctor do as much for me?” The adjacent leaf bears the address panel (in another hand), which also has an area of paper loss and a partial fold separation. In very good condition overall, with intersecting folds (short separations and holes touching a few words), a few areas of minor paper loss along folds, and some scattered staining. The signature is largely unaffected. An interesting look into Burr’s life after returning from self-imposed exile.
