Lot of 11. Correspondence between Ella Shute in Wheatfields and Globe City, to Louie Earl. Most discuss what is going on in Shute’s life. Apparently, women trade pieces of material they have made into dresses so they can make quilts out of their friends dresses. It is a way of keeping their friends close to them. Shute and Earl were girlhood friends and Shute is very lonesome for her friend. Having pieces of material from Earl was a way of keeping the friends close. Shute says the mines have been keeping them all sick. The air from the mines is not healthy. Shute also talks about her children. Her son, Walter, fell out of the wagon on the way to town and had his head run over by a wagon wheel. His head was in sand though, so he survived the accident unharmed according to his mother. Louie’s brother went to the Black Hills to check out the mines there. Shute writes the “Indians are burning everything.” She also had news from Illinois about the “Negro excursion to Chicago.” So even in the middle of Arizona, Shute is able to keep up with current events of the country. Most of the letters are in good shape, but a few have some water spots and small tears at the folds. All are very readable and entertaining.
