This 37 x 66 100% wool Navajo Rug was woven in traditional colors: red, dark brown, heather brown, and natural. Because there is no black wool, only a dark brown color, this rug dates pre-1930. The rug shows many very clear lazy or sectional lines, a standard feature of Navajo weaving resulting from the use of a standing loom. The Navajo weaver typically works on one section before moving over to work on the next, rather than working straight across the rug one row at a time. The joins between worked sections are evidenced by a diagonal line in the weaving. This feature is not found in machine made rugs, or in rugs by most other cultures. The patterns on this rug appear to suggest Klagetoh style (see the grey background and stepped double diamond pattern) but also features a double border and square greek key spiral motifs. This rug is in good condition, with a very small patch of moth wear on one side of the rug (but the damage does not run straight through the rug) and little bleeding from the red wools into the natural.
