Polk's First Statehood Edition Vol. I. Contains a complete business directory of each state "being complete in itself." Each state is divided into four sections (alphabetic arrangement of each city, village, post-office, and settlement), lists of names of persons and institutions with associated locations, trade directory, and regular business directory. Also lists commercial laws, counties and county officers, courts, terms and judges, fish and game laws, militia, mining laws, railroads, and state institutions and officers. With white and green papers and covered in brown and red. Cover advertisements in black and silver. Additional advertisements across fore-edge. 723pp. 6.5" x 9.5". The earliest settlement at Phoenix dates to about 1868. One appointed committee member to name the town (Darrell Duppa) declared that "A new city would spring Phoenix-like upon the ruins of a former civilization" [Fontana, Bernard L., Arizona Place Names, 1988]. The declaration led to the naming of the city which was first used on May 4, 1868. Phoenix is but one community here detailed.
