Includes the following papers: 1) Introduction by J.W. Powell, Director, 2) "Navaho Houses," Mindeleff, Cosmos. Mindeleff was hired to map Indian villages in the Southwestern United States [aaanet.org]. That assignment led to several publications for the Bureau of Ethnology. This one has a description of the country, habits of the people, summer huts or shelters, sweat houses, effect of modern conditions, ceremonies of dedication, a dance, and nomenclature. His previous work in Arizona noted the first active pursuit of preservation and protection of a prehistoric site by the U.S. government at Casa Grande outside Phoenix [tdar.org]. Includes multiple plates and text figures. 3) "Archaeological Expedition to Arizona in 1895," Fewkes, Jesse Walter.
