Introduction by J.W. Powell. With the following papers: 1) "Primitive Trephining in Peru," Muniz, Manuel Antonio and W.J. McGee. Muniz served from time to time as Surgeon General in Peru. He was responsible for amassing a vast collection of materials from the "long-neglected tombs of Peru" where he found everything from weapons to somatic remains of the ancient people [from the preface]. His collection included over a thousand crania. Nineteen were found to be trephined, sometimes more than once. Trephining is an ancient surgical practice of removing small sections of the crania. Trephining in Peru was typically done with a knife of bronze or obsidian. The wound was covered over with a shell, gold, or silver. Often, the resulting disc of bone was used as an amulet [uic.edu]. The Muniz/McGee paper includes forty plate illustrations of the 19 crania specimens. 2) "Cliff Ruins of Canyon de Chelly, Arizona," Mindeleff, Cosmos. 3) Day Symbols of the Maya Year," Thomas, Cyrus. 4) Tusayan Snake Ceremonies, Fewkes, Jesse Walter. Some pages stuck due to moisture problems. Rebound in green cloth with lettering in gilt. 326 pp. 8" x 10.5". - Vinegar Collection
