Includes Introduction by J.W. Powell and the following papers: "Prehistoric Textile Art of Eastern United States," Holmes, William Henry. Holmes produced volumes of work in ethnography leading to an event at his 70th birthday where his friends presented him with "The Holmes Volume," 500 pages of essays produced by Holmes during his career. After his post as Chief for the Bureau of Ethnology, Holmes dedicated the rest of his career to work in museums. Late in life, he became Director of the newly established National Gallery of Art. One of his notable phrases is, "Make it tell the story," here not only good advice for museum work but also for work in any field of the liberal arts [aaanet.org]. 2) "Stone Art," Gerard Fowke. Fowke's ongoing archaeological investigations here focuses on stone art such as chisels, grooved axes, cones, mullers, hammer stones, spades, stemmed flints and blunt arrowheads or "bunts". 3) "Aboriginal Remains in Verde Valley, Arizona," Mindeleff, Cosmos. 4) "Omaha Dwellings, Furniture and Implements," Dorsey, J. Owen. Ongoing further investigations of the Omaha tribe, its goods and customs. 5) "Casa Grande Ruin," Mindeleff, Cosmos. Includes first accounts of Mindeleff's investigation of the preservation of Casa Grande, the first prehistoric site to be preserved by the United States government.
