With Introduction by J.W. Powell. Includes the papers: 1) "Ethnological Results of the Point Barrow Expedition," Murdoch, John. Murdock's research on tribes of Alaska came from a polar expedition from 1881-1883. Murdock was a known naturalist when the expedition began [biodiversitylibrary.org]. He discusses culture, habitations, personal adornment, implements of general use, weapons, tools for snow and ice working, art, domestic life, government and religion. 2) "The Medicine-Men of the Apache, Their Modes of Treating Disease, Their Superstitions, Paraphernalia, etc.," Bourke, John G. (Col.) After fighting in the U.S. Army against the Apache for a number of years, Bourke learned the language and began noting his encounters. Surprisingly, he lived among several Arizona tribes between conflicts, [arlingtoncemetery.net] and then wrote this exceptionally researched account of Apache Medicine-men and Medicine-women. Includes sections on implements and objects, and their respective modes of treating disease.
