AUTOGRAPHED LETTER OF BENJ. C. BRODIE. ALS by Benjamin C. Brodie (1783-1862). Date uncertain, possibly London address. Brodie was the surgeon to the royal family, but, maybe more importantly, he was one of the first to describe the progression of rheumatoid arthritis (before it was known as such), including the disease's effects on the joints, bursae and tendon sheaths, in 1819. This note reads, in part: "Dear Madam, If I possibly can do so I will wait on you today between two & three o'clock. If I am prevented from doing so you shall not fail to see me at the same time tomorrow.... [signed] B C Brodie." The letter is affixed to a mat along with a lithograph of Brodie, with minor soil, framed under glass. Not removed from frame for examination.
