AUGUSTE CHOUTEAU: (1786 - 1838) French fur trader and explorer in the Midwest, obtained a monopoly on fur trade in the Missouri valley, son of the founder of the first white settlement in Oklahoma. Chouteau also gave his frontier trading post the name St. Louis, which is now the site of the city of the same name. Partly-printed D.S. "Aug. Chouteau", 6 3/4" x 3", St. Louis, Aug. 10, 1820, a Bank of Missouri five dollar note signed by Chouteau as president of the bank. Tear near left margin repaired on verso, light toning, overall very good. $200-300
