Gouache on paper, framed. Featuring a portrait in vibrant colors. Signed and attr. August Macke (German, 1887-1914) on the lower left corner. Gallery stamp marked on verso. 24 x 19 cm (9.4 x 7.4 inches). Frame size: 33.5 x 28 cm (13.2 x 11.0 inches). August Macke was a German expressionist painter who was a member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group that included Wassily Kandinsky and centered on the idea of expressing the spiritual through art. Macke was influenced by travels and encounters in Switzerland, Paris, Italy, the Netherlands, and Tunisia, and he cycled through styles including impressionism, futurism, fauvism, and cubism. The artist developed an oeuvre that combined many of these styles into bright, planar paintings featuring natural landscapes of rolling hills and turn-of-the century life. After his death during World War I in 1914, fellow Blaue Reiter member (Franz Marc) praised Macke in his obituary as "the one who gave colors the brightest and purest tone of us all.” PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
