AUDUBON, JOHN J.
(1785 - 1851) American artist and ornithologist who voyaged down the Mississippi observing and painting birds for his definitive work Birds of America. Rare A.D.S. ""Audubon & Bakewell"" at the head, 2pp. 4to., [Kentucky] Aug. 13, 1816 - Jan. 7, 1817 an account sheet for merchandise taken on credit from Samuel F. Williams. The account in the same of Audubon's business partnership with Benjamin Bakewell contains entries for various items, including ""...6 yds Homespun...Shirring...Lace...Muslin...2 bunches thread, 4 thimbles...3 pr. Leather Shoes...1 pen knife, 1 1/2 lb coffee...1lb. powder, 4 lb. shott...1 tobacco knife...1 brass inkstand..."" and numerous other items totaling $62.33. At this time, Audubon was attempting different business ventures including a steam mill, all of which failed. In 1819, he was doing so poorly that he was jailed for debt and all of his assets seized. It was then he moved to Cincinnati where he became a taxidermist and began to publish his bird drawings. Moderate soiling, weakened folds and a few chips resulting in some loss, otherwise very good.
