SOFA AND TWO END TABLES
CA. 1930s
probably manufactured by Frankl Galleries, New York
ebonized wood, rosewood,
chromed metal, white leather (3)
each table: 23 7/8 x 10 1/2 x 29 1/4 in.
(60.7 x 26.6 x 74.3 cm)
sofa: 33 1/4 x 67 3/4 x 33 1/2 in.
(84.4 x 172.1 x 85.1 cm)
ESTIMATE: $18,000-24,000
The horizontal banding that races around the corners of this sofa suite is more decorative than the California streamlining employed by Kem Weber in his furniture and clocks. The design seems inspired by the entrance to Raymond Hood's McGraw-Hill Building in New York, completed in 1931. Numerous Manhattan apartment interiors depicted in 1930s shelter publications featured these luxurious, tentatively modern seating designs, which complemented the aggressive streamlining found in kitchens and bathrooms epitomized by the "Coldspot" refrigerator designed by Raymond Loewy.
