PENNSYLVANIA PERCUSSION RIFLE BY SAMUEL MILLER SHILLITO OF CHAMBERSBURG, PA. Cal. 46 NSN. Bbl. 41 1/4" oct., fitted w/ sm. V-notch rear & brass blade front sight. A brass rectangle let into top bbl. flat engraved "S. M. Shillito". "Geoge Golcher" marked percussion lock has some stamped engraving. Set triggers are fitted. Stock of full length dark stained curly maple extends to muzzle w/ 2 1/4" brass cap. Crescent butt has patchbox release button in 7 1/2" return w/ spear point. Return is also engraved "A. CRIDER 1848". Patchbox w/ well engraved semi fancy sideplates has scrolled top finial & is pierced w/ Horseshoe shaped area of wood w/ secondary keystone inlet decoration. Rectangular patchbox cover is scroll engraved. Left side of stock w/ raised carved volute at rear of sm. cheekpiece has oval silver inlay engraved w/ a heraldic eagle on cheekpiece. Another silver oval is at top of grip. Brass trigger guard has finger spur at grip. Long, arched & shaped sideplate is nicely engraved. Front portion of stock has silver inlays. Two of bell shape toward rear & 8 dbl. acorn shaped & engraved are along bbl. CONDITION: fine w/ some repairs. Bbl. retaining a considerable amount of what appears to be its original brown w/ some freckling & staining. Lock is mostly brown patina. Brass a dark mustard color. Stock retains most of what appears to be its original finish w/ numerous marks & rubs & stock has also been broken through the wrist & has old epoxy repair w/ some loss between rear of lock & trigger plate. One sm. silver inlay is missing on left side along w/ one of the dbl. acorn inlays. Good, strong bore w/ some scattered light pitting. Lock and triggers are operable. A very attractive rifle.
