ATTERBURY ( Francis ) : - Wharton ( Philip ), Duke. His Grace the Duke of Wharton's speech in the House of Lords, on the third reading of the bill to inflict pains and penalties on Francis (late) Lord Bishop of Rochester ; May the 15th. 1723. Printed for T. Warner, 1723FIRST EDITION, later isssue, pp 25, (1,blank), folio, recent wraps:very good, uncut copy Wharton (1698-1731), `the scorn and wonder of our days' (Pope), noted for his profligacy, turncoat politics and as president of the `Hell-fire Club'. This long and able speech in opposition to the bill of pains and penalties against Atterbury affords the best criterion we have of his undoubted talents : it was the most honest and courageous action of his career. The second of two issues noted in ESTC90.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) GASTRELL ( Francis ), Bp. The Bishop of Chester's case, with relation to the wardenship of Manchester. In which is shewn, that no other degrees but such as are taken in the University, can be deemed legal qualifications for any ecclesiastical preferment in England. Oxford, Printed at the Theater, 1721. FIRST EDITION, pages (4), 52, folio, recent wrapper : a very good to nice, uncut copy.A forcible writer frequently mentioned by Swift in terms of admiration. He seems to have been the first prelate who truly conceived what the duties of a diocesan bishop ought to be. He strongly opposed the bill for pains and penalties prosecuted against Atterbury and, in 1717, warmly defended the university of Oxford when it was attacked in the Lords for a pretended riot on the birthday of the Prince of Wales. This present pamphlet, against the crown and the Bishop of Canterbury, secured for him a vote of thanks from the university of Oxford. (2) ATTERBURY ( Francis ) : - Phipps ( Sir Constantine. The Defence of Francis, late Lord Bishop of Rochester, at the bar of the House of Lords, on Thursday the 9th, and Saturday the 11th, of May, 1723.
