ASSASSINS AT ALAMUT (Batinid): Muhammad I, 1138-1162, AV ¼ dinar (1.33g), Kursi al-Daylam, AH555, A-1918, the title al-mustafa li-din Allah nizar on reverse, below the Shi'ite formula 'ali wali Allah, lovely VF, RR. The Batinids were an Isma’ili dynasty based in the Alborz mountains north of Qazwin, which this called Kursi al-Daylam ("the throne of Daylam"), now known as Alamut, isolated on the top of a remote mountain in the Alburz. Their fame arose from their practice of terrorizing their neighbors by sending out hit squads allegedly high on hashish. They were known as the hashish-eaters, hashshashiyun in Arabic, from which the English word assassin is derived. They terrorized much of the Arabic and Iranian kingdoms for nearly two centuries, until they surrendered to the Mongols troops commanded by Hulagu in AH656 (1258).
