“AS FOUND” JACOB WELSHANS SIGNED, CARVED &
ENGRAVED FLINTLOCK RIFLE, EX-KINDIG COLLECTION, CIRCA 1790. Cal. .55. NSN. 60” Overall, 44” oct. smoothbore bbl. signed in script “J. W” between two crosses made from stamped stars, repeated on most of his known survivors. The bbl. also has a maker’s cartouche “GR” on left breech. Fixed notch rear sight & inset brass blade front sight. This rifle is pictured & described in "Kentucky Rifle Patchboxes & Barrel Marks" by Roy Chandler 1971. (page 381, figure 757) Jacob Welshans worked in York County & is listed in the tax records between 1779 & 1807. Rifle features incised C-scrolls, incised perimeter lines, & checkered wrist. Rifle is brass mounted w/ 4 piece engraved patch box, silver vacant silver plated thumb plate & engraved Hunter’s Star on cheekpiece. Toe plate has similar engraving on either side of patch box door release button. CONDITION: very good overall, appears to be original flint, complete & original, iron is overall smooth dark mottled gray patina w/ light pitting at breech, crisp signature & cartouche. Brass has a light to medium mustard patina, stock is solid, well fit except for lock which is slightly undersized. Stock has a few age cracks, worn checkering, unaffecting overall aesthetic, Cock could not be pulled back and is frozen, bore is clean & dark. (01-18498/JS). ANTIQUE. $10,000-20,000.
