Returning from service in India where his aggressive actions achieved great success against local Indian rulers, Wellesley writes to the Indian jurist Sir Thomas Strange regarding the debates in the House of Commons on the impeachment of Lord Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, First Lord of the Admiralty, charged with misuse of Naval funds. Wellesley provides a detailed account, “as far as they had come to my knowledge,” mentioning the recommendations of Prime Minister Pitt. As a result of the speech Lord Melville had made in his own defense in the House of Commons, Wellesley comments, “I judge that he is certainly free from guilt...” He writes, “It is my firm opinion that there is nothing against Lord Melville excepting the possibility his knowledge that [the Naval paymaster] derived an illegal advantage from the use of the...money. It is difficult to guess & there is nothing to enable me to form a Judgment of the cause for which Mr. Pitt recommended to His Majesty to dismiss Lord Melville from his councils & office, excepting it be this one fact...” Boldly penned and signed. A Fine example. Wellesley himself during this voyage home stopped off on the remote island of St Helena in the Atlantic Ocean.
