LITERATURE
Arthur Siegel, RETROSPECTIVE, Chicago, Edwynn Houk Gallery, 1982, cat. no. 4 (illustrated)
Between 1936 and 1941, automobile companies and labor unions were locked in bitter struggle. Massive sit-down strikes were countered by violent efforts to extinguish the labor movement. The exact purpose of this particular assembly is not known, but the evidence suggests a rally for members of the United Auto Workers and the Congress for Industrial Organization (UAW-CIO) in Cadillac Square in Detroit. Only two other prints of this negative are known in this large size. Siegel was back in Detroit after spending much of 1938 at the New Bauhaus in Chicago. Siegel later befriended Todd Webb and Harry Callahan at a local camera club, and was instrumental in arranging a teaching appointment for Callahan in Chicago.
