ARTHUR S. SULLIVAN: (1842 - 1900) English composer who, in collaboration with William S. Gilbert, wrote the immensely popular comic operas "H.M.S. Pinafore", "The Pirates of Penzance", and "The Mikado". Fine content A.L.S. "Arthur Sullivan", 2pp. 8vo., Monte Carlo, Nov. 24, 1892 to Henry White. In part: "...Pray do not think that the delay in answering the invitation from the Chicago Ex:[hibition] Committee is owing to forgetfulness. I have purposely put off replying definitely so as to gain time to see whether my health and engagements would permit me to accept the flattering invitation. But I feel that I ought to delay no longer, otherwise the Committee cannot complete their arrangements...I am not strong enough to stand the excitement that such an undertaking would entail, and I hate crowds whether musical or otherwise...". Sullivan was a long-time resident of Monte Carlo where he indulged in extravagant gambling and other excesses. His health had disintegrated: he was almost in perpetual pain, and his face had become haggard and deeply lined from the overuse of morphine. It was a shabby close to a brilliant career; and no one realized this more than Sullivan himself. Very good. $500-700
