(1829 - 1886) Twenty-first President of the United States who took office following the assassination of James Garfield. Rare, early fine content A.L.S. "Chester", 1p. 8vo., [n.p.],Sep. 12, 1864 to his sister Regina in Cohoes. Arthur writes of the wounding of their only brother, Major William Arthur, Jr. In part: "…I received a telegram from William on Friday that the surgeon had told him he might leave the Hospital & that he wanted me to go for him at once. I went to Washington the same night & returned with him the next night…He made the journey very comfortably having a state room in a sleeping car. His wound is doing well & he will stay with me until I go to Cohoes again…". On August 24, Union II Corps moved south along the Weldon Railroad, tearing up track, preceded by Gregg’s cavalry division. On August 25, Maj. Gen. Henry Heth attacked and overran the faulty Union position at Ream’s Station, capturing 9 guns, 12 colors, and many prisoners, shattering the II Corps. Arthur was wounded in the clash, struck deaf from a gunshot wound to his head. Near fine condition.
