ARMANDO MORALES. (b. 1927). "Place de la Gare",1999. oil on canvas - 25 1/2 x 39 in (65 x 100 cm) PROVENANCE: Galerie Claude Bernard. Paris, France. Private collection, Canada In "Place de la Gare" we find all the elements that made Armando MORALES' paintings famous, the only exception being his still lifes and his "jungles". This particular paintng is one of the best balanced compositions created by this international acclaimed artist. Eventhough, it is a recent piece, still forms part of his best known series of paintings which are based on memories of his birthplace, the Nicaraguan port-city of Granada. This painting portraits to perfection what ARMANDO MORALES said once when describing Granada : "A little city, completely surrealistic, with a nineteenth century railway station, which does not cease to haunt me. There is in it a little bit of the South of Tennessee Williams...an inertia,an immobility. A completely anarchronistic passivity. These figures compositions are deliberately fragmentary. They show not the reality of Nicaragua but what the memory of an exile preserves, with the gaps which the process of recollection inevitably entails."
