ARIZONA (1940)
39” x 31”. Oil on canvas. Unsigned but attributed to Benton Clark (1895-1964) Painted for the Oscar nominated movie billed as the mightiest outdoor picture of all time. Minor restoration. Arizona was filmed in Old Tuscon and starred drifter (William Holden) who helps the first American woman in Tucson (Jean Arthur) protect her freight line from Indians and conspirators. Arizona is a solid western, held together by good performances as well as some great production values and, unlike most westerns, is very true to the 1860s period correctly depicting the buildings, implements, tools, wagons, and guns just before and during the American Civil War.
