ARANDA, Emmanuel d'.- Relation de la captivité & liberté du sieur Emanuel d'Aranda, jadis esclave à Alger; où se trouvent plusieurs particularités de l'Afrique, dignes de remarques. Troisiéme édition, augmentée de treize relations, & autres tailles douces, par le même autheur. Bruxelles, Jean Mommart, 1662. In-24° : [12 dont frontisp. et portrait de l'auteur]-400-[5] pp., 1 f.bl. et 2 pll. dépl. Rel. de l'époque : plein vélin (plats lég. baîllants). Narration de la captivité d'un Brugeois (1614-c. 1686), docteur en droit de l'Université de Louvain et descendant d'une famille espagnole dont le rôle fut important dans la vie politique à Bruges au XVIIe s. En 1640, alors qu'il fait un pèlerinage sur les terres de ses ancêtres, il est fait prisonnier par des corsaires algérois près des côtes bretonnes. Il séjourne un an dans une sorte de bagne à Alger, "alors véritable caverne de voleurs, réceptacle de renégats et vagabonds" (cfr baron de Saint-Genois, dans la Biogr. nat.). Son récit regorge de détails sur la vie algéroise : mariage, rites funéraires, empoisonnements, médecine, transfuges religieux, récits misérables d'autres esclaves... Echangé contre des captifs turcs, il est relâché avec ses compagnons et rentre à Bruges en 1642. Les 2 planches figurent une vue dépliante de la ville et baie d'Alger et un supplice infligé à un esclave chrétien. Ecrite dans une langue animée et agréable, l'originale fut publiée à Bruxelles, Mommaert, en 1656, et rééditée encore plusieurs fois pendant une 20aine d'années et traduite en latin, anglais et néerlandais (1682). After full payment, buyers are kindly requested to take away their purchases immediately after the auction or at the bookshop the next Tuesday after the auction 230 av. Louise, from 2 pm until 6 pm.
Goods will be send only after customers’ payment.
Packing and dispatching are entirely at the buyer’s own expense.
Books whose price exceed 3.000 BEF will be send by registered post.

Payment will be made in Belgian Francs. We do not accept credit cards neither cheques whose total amount exceed 7.000 BEF or cheques not validated for higher sum.
Terms of sale require buyers to pay immediately for their purchases, which means that lots will be released to them only when full and cleared payment as been received by us
In addition to the hammer price, the buyer has to pay a buyer’s premium of 21%, V.A.T. inclusive, all strictly in cash and in Belgian francs (BEF).
In case of original art and if the principles of the author’s rights are applicable, an extra 4% must be paid on each hammer price of at least 50.000 BEF.
All items are assumed to be in good condition unless otherwise stated. Buyers are kindly invited to carry out their own inspection of the lots they want to buy. All items to be auctioned are on view for several days prior to the sale.
Returning an item after the striking of the hammer will not be accepted, whatever the reason put forward. Those items bought on order must be inspected within 8 days after receipt. Any return after this term will be refused.
All items of the catalogue with the mention « n.c. » (non collationné = not inspected) are not subject to return. Neither are those sold in lots (two items or more) works consisting in multiple volumes and periodicals or series.
If you cannot attend the auction, we can execute written bids on your behalf. To ensure a satisfactory service, it is necessary to make arrangements for the services at least one day before the sale.
On every purchase Belgian law only is applicable, and all cases of dispute are exclusively to the competence of the Brussels Chamber.
