ARAB-BYZANTINE: Standing Emperor, ca. 660s-680s, AE fals (5.34g), ND, A-3523Q, standing emperor, holding long cross & globus cruciger, uncertain symbols left & right // cursive m, Greek letters to left & below, coarse Arabic legend to right that is possibly intended to be the mint name, attractive patination, VF.

UPDATE: The mint is Tabariya, and two examples of this rare type appeared in our auction #10, Lots 184 and 185, on which the mint name was clear at the left of the obverse. The reverse legends remain uncertain. Also published by Charlie Karukstis, in ONS Journal #193 (2007), pp. 40-42. Goodwin knows of 5 specimens of this rare type (including this one), all from the same pair of dies.
