The mine takes its name from that region of the U.S. west of the Mississippi River which was designated as the Indian Territory and ceded to the tribes in 1834, with the intention that it be occupied by the relocated “Five Civilized Tribes” of the southeast—Chickasaw, Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole (which later expanded to other tribes). The Territory was gradually eaten away by white settlement and federal nontribal subdivision and in 1907 the remaining land became part of Oklahoma Territory [Ref: www.scripophily.net/interminandm.html].
