APRILI ( Giuseppe ). The Modern Italian Method of Singing, with a variety of progressive examples, and thirty six solfeggi. Printed by Rt. Birchall, circa 180553-pages, watermarked 1805, oblong folio, disbound : a nice, clean copy. Aprili (1732-1813), Italian male contralto and singing-master, considered one of the greatest castrati of his time, "an excellent teacher of singing and one of Cimarosa's masters … his best work was [this] system of solfeggi, which passed through many editions". - Grove.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) POTTER ( Cipriani ). Seconde Toccata pour le pianoforte composee et dediee a Mademoiselle Upton a Londres … Leipzig, au Bureau de Musique de C. F. Peters [1818]. FIRST EDITION, plate number 1463, 13-pp, oblong folio, disbound : a very good copy. The second of three toccata, Op 9 : the first was published in 1816 and the third in 1825. Potter was highly regarded by Beethoven and Grove describes his later works as "masterly". (2) CARAFA DI COLOBRANO ( Michele Enrico ). Cavatina Amor, fortuna, e pace nell' opera Adele di Lusignano. Musica del Sig. Michele Caraffa [sic] ridotta con accompto: di pianoforte. Roma, nella stamperia lithografica di musica con privativa di Leopoldo Ratti e Gio: Batta: Cencetti e Compo … , circa 1823-28. Plate number 85 (centered), lithographed on 7-pages, oblong folio, disbound : in very good to nice state. Not in Twyman's Early lithographed music, but his helpful comments on imprint dates for this publisher suggests a date of 1823-28. (3) MERCADANTE ( Saverio ). Scena e duetto qual ardir tu mio rivale nell' opera Donna Caritea del Sig. Saverio Mercadante ridotto con accompto. di p. forte. Roma, netta stamperia lithografica di musica con privativa di Leopoldo Ratti, Gio. Batta Cencetti, e compo. in Via Cantone della Posta Vecchia numo. 23, circa 1826-28. Plate number 197/a-b-c. Lithographed on 17-pp, oblong folio, disbound : in nice state Date as suggested by Twyman, though this item is not amongst those he describes. Not found in COPAC or WorldCat. The second enduring success of his career came in Venice in 1826 with Caritea, regina di Spagna (more often known as Donna Caritea), a work which marked an important new step in Mercadante’s style : it was his first depiction of an operatic character suffering inner conflict, a theme that later became central to many of his operas and inspired his most successful works (Grove).
